What licenses do I need to start a catering business in Wisconsin?
At minimum you need a DATCP food dealer/retail food establishment license, a seller's permit from DOR if collecting sales tax, a local business license from your municipality, and a certified food manager on staff. If serving alcohol, you also need an appropriate liquor license from your municipality.
Can I cater from my home kitchen in Wisconsin?
Generally no. DATCP requires that food for commercial catering be prepared in a licensed commercial kitchen. However, the Pickle Bill may allow limited direct-to-consumer sales of certain home-prepared items. For full catering services, you need a licensed kitchen.
Do caterers need food safety certification in Wisconsin?
Yes. At least one person per establishment must hold a certified food manager credential (such as ServSafe). This person must be available during all hours of food preparation and service.
